奥古斯丁的个人和他所处的时代，与今日成千成万的个人和我们所处的时代大同小异。他原来被罪恶捆绑，心灵苦闷，虽要觅见真理，解脱罪恶，却不可得。他悔改皈依基督，才认识了真理，获得了自由。他所处的时候，是多难之秋，素以生活程度和文化水准高超而自豪的罗马帝国竟为蛮族所摧毁，世界陷入混乱，人心惶恐不安。奥氏奉上帝选召，向个人和历代说话，作了保罗的继承者，中世纪的尊师，改教家的先导，近世纪的恩人。近年来对于奥氏发生了浓厚的兴趣，所以对于他的著述又有许多新的译述。正如他对以往发生了伟大的影响，他对将来必有伟大的影响发生，乃是可断言的。
